WORKBENCH (http://www.savefile.com/files/2151371)

Welcome to round one of the Nano Challenge!

Before we get into the scenario behind this one, we need to go over the rules.

-No building of anything outside of the marked area. Changing the boundaries or construction outside of them will result in disqualification.
-No team work. Keep it individual, at least for this round.
-All entries must be submitted in the appropriate round's thread before the given deadline
-Judging criteria:
Architecture/Scenery : 10 possible
Creativity/Use of Space : 10 possible
Quality of specialty ride: 10 possible
30 possible points

With that out of the way, lets get to the fun part. You have been contacted by Dorney Park to construct a new thrill ride (coaster or flat) and surrounding area at the Western edge of the park. Management is looking for an experience that isn't currently offered at Dorney Park, so pick your ride type accordingly. In addition to the thrill ride, Dorney also wants to expand on it's dining experience. The red area marked on the template is already plumbed for an existing restroom. Use this plumbing to design and build a food establishment above this area. Lastly, the gravel area highlights an existing walkway which Dorney wants to expand into the main midway of the new area. The areas entrance is marked by the RCT2 entrance. Feel free to use peeps!

SUMMARY:
-A new thrill experience (coaster or flat)
-New food establishment [RED CHECKERS]
-Expanded midway [GRAVEL] (Enter from RCT2 entrance side)

DEADLINE: Saturday, August 1st

Be sure to keep it neat, creative and realistic! Any questions pertaining to this round, ask away! Sorry I couldn't upload this to the forum, the attachments are not cooperating.

Hey, would it be ok if my coaster went outside the mapped area by one tile, which is only because i have to do that for a turn to work. All supports would be able to stay inside the map, its just theres no other way to make the turn.

Everything has to be contained within the map. Thanks for checking though.

SO does the food establishiment have to be within the red area or can you have a patio or part of the resturaant outside?

Jman

The food area has to cover the red area. So, it can be bigger than the area, just make sure its above that zone and is at least that big.

Are we allowed to manipulate the landscape so we can create a mountain in the middle or something?

Yes, keep in mind that this is a realistic scenario though, within a Cedar Fair park. Ill leave that interpretation up to you.

Can it be a roller coaster or does it have to be a thrill ride?

A roller coaster is a thrill ride. That one could be confusing... fixed.

A giant custom flat would be cool, but you would have a hard time filling in the rest of the space. A roller coaster is ideal.

Good luck,
Jay

So can my unique ride be a totally bizarre hacked ride?

Well, sure.

Are there any custom supports in the scenario? Or do we just have to be creative?

You would know that there were custom supports if you downloaded the scenario.

I downloaded the scenerio, and I really haven't found anything. I just don't know if I'm totally just missing something or whatever cause that happens a lot.

NOTE: The RCT2 version does not have invisible stations so the quality of the park might be a little different.

Results!

#1- Goliath225 : Mustang

Architecture/Scenery : 9/10

The archy in this entry was downright awesome. I loved how the restaurant had large windows to view the surrounding coaster, and how the buildings felt as if they were built as a part of the same themed area. The reason you did't score 10 in this area is because of realism - Sadly, I find the architectural touches a bit advanced for a CF park. I wish they looked to you for blueprints!

Creativity/Use of Space : 5/10

You managed to fit a high-capacity 4000-foot woodie in a pretty tight space, so that gets some points in this department. The downfall is the large, open area in front of the wooden coaster. It provides great views of Mustang from the midway, but it also leaves quite a bit of valuable real-estate unused. A pavilion for viewing and eating or a flat ride would have brought the score up tremendously.

Quality of specialty ride: 8/10

What an awesome ride. Its got speed, duration, and looks great. My major complaint is the pacing on the pre-lift is a tad too slow, and the ride is hugley unrealistic in a major way: Block sections. You are running three trains on a layout with no true MCBR. In the event that a train rolled back, all you have is a mid course chain lift to create an additional block section... a possible collision.

TOTAL: 22/30

#2- sfgam2006 : Steel Knight

Architecture / Scenery: 5/10

If you looked at the real aerial image of the plot of land, you would see that there are no trees. So, the fact that this entry takes place in a forest was an issue for me. The architecture was basic but nice, and met all of the requirements with a nice station. Its ironic that both entries had their station in the same location.

Creativity / Use of space: 7/10

The layout on SK is certainly out of the ordinary for a B&M standup, something that Dorney, and most parks for that matter, does not currently offer. I really liked the opening sequence on the coaster, as well as the placement of the enterprise to draw guests to the back of the area. A complaint however, is the lack of interest at the entrance to the new area. Theres nothing much to draw guests in to the new attractions.

Specialty Ride: 6/10

As said before, I love the creative twist on this ride. However, the pacing kills me. The ride hits the brakes with so much speed, and there is space for more track. I would have loved to see a longer layout hittting the brakes at a slower speed.
