Engines Primed & Ready for Steel Hawg Roller Coaster
To Debut at Indiana Beach in 2008

Coaster will be first of its kind in United States!
Fun, flips, and gravity defying excitement are just the beginning of what’s in store for guests when they visit Indiana Beach Amusement Resort in 2008. Indiana’s largest and most popular amusement resort and vacation playground announced the first major steel coaster to be constructed in the state: Steel Hawg. The new family coaster will be Indiana Beach’s sixth roller coaster and its first to take riders upside-down.
“When we debuted The Hoosier Hurricane in 1994, it was the first new wooden coaster the state had seen in over fifty years,” offered Tom Spackman, Jr. of Indiana Beach. “Now, with the Steel Hawg, we’ll be able to continue that thrilling tradition and take our guests on an entirely unique ride on the state’s first custom steel coaster."
Readers of Indiana Beach's popular blog "View From The Crow's Nest"(www.IndianaBeach.com/blog (http://www.indianabeach.com/blog)) were the first to learn of the new attraction. The Amusement Resort had been hinting about the new coaster for weeks and announced the name and ride details to its readers on Monday, November 26, 2007.
Steel Hawg, which will rise 96 feet above ground and feature a 120º first drop along with multiple inversions, will be designed and constructed by ride manufacturer S & S Worldwide, Inc. of Logan, Utah. The company also produced Indiana Beach’s popular Double Shot tower ride and its Frog Hopper kiddie ride. “We’ve had an excellent relationship with S & S over the years and we’re looking forward to continuing that relationship with Steel Hawg,” stated Spackman. “The coaster will be a very distinctive ride with tight turns, 90º banks, inversions, and one-of-a-kind elements. However, with a height limit of 48 inches, it’s also a ride designed for families to enjoy together."
One of the largest ride investments in Indiana Beach’s history, Steel Hawg will be located on the north side of the park near the popular Hoosier Hurricane and Rocky’s Rapids Log Flume rides. Steel Hawg is scheduled to deliver its unique coaster experience in mid-May.
Indiana Beach Amusement Resort, featuring over 40 rides and attractions, will open for its 83rd season beginning on May 3, 2008. Indiana Beach is located in northwest Indiana on beautiful Lake Shafer near Monticello, 95 miles north of Indianapolis or 110 miles south of Chicago. For additional information about Indiana Beach, visit www.IndianaBeach.com (http://www.IndianaBeach.com) or call 574-583-4144.

Four cars at four people per car.
Doesn't look like these will be coming to bigger parks, unless there's larger models.

It looks like a great ride though, can't wait to see the layout and trains.

^It's only a prototype model.

Finnally! I'm glad to see more coasters comming to my state, I might be able to squeeze this in. Despite the very negetive remarks I hear about Indiana Beach. :(

But hopefully this is going to be as good as it looks! :)

That drop looks interesting...getting turned upside down and then hanging there around the corner and down the drop.

Please enlighten?

^It's only a prototype model.

Just because this is the prototype doesn't mean this isn't as big as it will get.

You mentioned that it was a very small ride, and that they probably won't show up in bigger parks because of the small capacity.

It has a small layout and an even smaller capacity because it's only a prototype. Bigger models will come once the ride proves effective.

Like Xcelerator, and then Top Thrill Dragster.

I added the layout to the first post, the 120º drop looks insane. Very, very unique coaster.

That brings me to my next thought - Do you think Hersheypark will still go ahead and advertise Fahrenheit for featuring the steepest drop in the United States?..

Please enlighten?

Don't get me wrong, I know it's a pretty good park, but a few of my very good friends go there every summer, and they say that the park is deteriorating. They also have noticed frequently how unlcleanly the park often is, how many rides are in need of cleaning/repair, and how the food and park service is less than spectacular.

But I'l hold my opinion until I go. It sounds like a good park to me, just heard some negatives, that's all.

^^ I sure as hell would if I was Hershey. Talk about getting kicked in the balls, eh? It's worse than the Top Thrill Dragster/Kingda Ka thing.

Looks painful....but interesting. It is unique though, but nothing that will make me want to visit the park for.

Unless the drop has no brakes or transports on it the ride I do not see why people would ride it.

It seems as though it were a typical SS ride.

What is the 7/8 train capacity?

The capacity will be 4 riders per car, just like S&S's other Screaming Squirrel coasters. And, there will only be 4 cars, not 7 or 8.

This coaster certainly looks intresting. I've been waiting for S&S to build the El Loco model of their Screaming Squirrel coaster for a long time, and finally that time is here. I cant wait to see a POV of this thing. It's certainly going to be a wild ride. I wonder how intense it will be. From the looks of it, it looks to be very intense however, speed can play a big factor here. If this will be like all of S&S's other Screaming Squirrels, this coaster will feature brakes on most of the saxophone-like elements.

Bear in mind that without those, the forces would build up after every drop, and they would eventually reach unbearable levels.

Does anybody know how these brakes work? If you think Steel Hawg would hurt, then what about this?

http://www.rcdb.com/ig3408.htm?picture=4

You can't really see any brakes on that first dive...it's so weird!

Jman
12-26-2007, 05:09 PM
^Theres a break fin on the center of the track during the entire dive, so the entire element is taken at slowed speeds.

I don't know why you're all freaking out. Those are pictures from No Limits so it's not like it's the official renderings. I'm sure it'll have the same system as the "afterburner."

Everybody take a chill pill!

Mike T

I don't see where anybody is freaking out Mitch. But I do think that the ride system for Steel Hawg will be different for sure. Unlike Afterburner, Steel Hawg will have sections on the ride where the car will have to travel uphill. With that in mind, the coaster is going to need momentum to get there. So instead of having the braking system to where it slowly guides the car down the incline, Steel Hawg will have something to a similar nature of a dive machine, where the car enters a braking field and is slowly released over the edge. From then on, the ride enters its conventional roller coaster mode, only with radical twists and turns courtesy of S&S...

Thrill Reconnoiter
12-27-2007, 03:07 AM
^It will still have the regular SS braking system on "all" the over-90-degree sections of track, then when it's back to vertical the brakes will cut.

Quite possibly one of the worst promo videos I've ever seen, but the ride looks decent.

Video looks horrible, the ride looks ok. I don't know what to say to be honest. It looks kind of painful in alot of areas. I actually believe it or not am beginning to grow fond of the Stingray when it comes to these compact layout type rides. I don't like the layout much of this one because it looks painful in many areas.

What a Beast! That would fit perfectly where Kong at my home park (SFDK) is. That would be awesome!
