Welcome to the first round of the NoLimits Competition!

---
Since this is the first round, I'll just give a quick description of how the game works: Each round a new objective and template is given. You must build a coaster according to the specifications given, yet be creative, and design your own masterpiece. You may use 3DS' if you so choose, but the winners ability will be based on layout, not the theme details they use.

After the due date, a voting thread will be posted with the track files so everyone can vote their favorite (as long as they have NL's of course)! Anyone can enter each round, anyone can not enter. Once you have completed your file, post in in this thread. This is totally for fun and not a sponsored game.

Week One

http://www.rollercoasterpro.com/gallery/geauga/dominator/17.jpg

Objective:
[You are a designer that will build a layout for the manufacturer.]

A relatively unknown park is looking to build an adrenaline-filled floorless attraction. The coaster will be contracted to Bolliger & Mabillard, a floorless roller coaster model. Due to a small budget, the attraction must use a conventional chain lift and be in the range of 2800-4200ft in length. Due to future capacity needs, the layout must also run at least two trains, or there be a total of at least 56 seats cycling the ride. The park would like atleast five inversions for marketing, aswell.

Due to zoning requirements the coaster cannot exceed 140ft in height and because the park has only prepared the given plot of land, you cannot build (both track and supports) outside the boundaries indicated by the markers. Fir trees may be removed as needed, but Maple trees may not. To adequately fit the layout of the park, the station must be somewhere inside of the box marked with an "X".

Remember, build within the parameters the park asks, yet be creative and realistic!

Good Luck!

Entry Deadline: March 16th, 11:59PM EST

Well, it is impossible to have 56 riders with <2> trains with 4-abreast.

1- 14 rows (NO!)
3-the closest is 4 rows, with 48 people.
4-the closest is 3 rows, with 48 people.

So, unless you cut the train in half, you have to have 2 trains.

Also, I will not be able to come in. The time is not on my side, both here and everywhere but here.

He means the two trains combined. So if you had two trains, four across, and seven rows, you get 56 people. Not a single train of 56 people.

"or there be a total of at least 56 seats cycling the ride."

If you were to have x # of trains, that was my point.

You have no idea how happy I was when I saw this thread :w00t:

Glad to have the competition back! I'l be sure to send my entry!

Like Nate mentioned, the two trains combined. So two 7-row trains will equal 56. Two 8-row trains would be 64, etc.

^I just was thinking about this the other day and thought it'd be interesting to see what everyone can do. I know after a while, NL's kind of gets hard to create things when there's no objective. So we'll run the first round and see how it goes.

I personally think it would be cool to have a few people rate the entries. It's a better way to get good feedback on NL work...or, maybe a system where everyone fills out a short survey for each ride? I don't want to get no votes and not find out why.

Starting my entry now!

Awesome!

I'm in... Just gotta find my Nolimits account data or buy it again..

I'm gonna enter, cause somebody has to get last place - right? ;)

I like the idea of a short survey, and maybe four or five things about each coaster they can rate from 1-10.

When we first did this a few years ago it was judged solely by one person, so it was building to appease one.

I'm kind of in that group with you though, about wanting more opinions. A survey would probably detour people from voting though. This is the "project" forum, so there's nothing that says one can't create their own thread and get feedback....although that's giving your competitors a glimpse ahead.

We could do a group of judges, but being forced into the Summer Showdown as a judge, I can say that it's not exactly easy or reliable. People don't have time, go missing, etc, and it turns into a big mess when committed judges don't follow through. Plus I figure we'll have a larger number of general voters over a few judges. I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible and fun; over complicating kind of detours.

Anyone have suggestions?

I personally feel that having to fill out a ballot to vote would decrease your over all votes. Like many people, I have No Limits purely to check out other people’s work. That’d be no problem for me here and it’s certainly no hassle to vote for my favorite coaster, but when you start talking about filling out ballots and accounting for everyone’s different level of experience with NL, things get complicated and messy. As lazy as it makes me sound, I’d probably give up. ;)

I defiantly think an easy-going voting system is the way to go. You can always make a separate thread later for ballots and constructive criticism. :)

I agree wth Max. I think we would get more votes and it would be easier to just have a nice simple vote :cool1:

Do I have to name the ride? If I'm just the designer I would guess that the park would name it. Just wondering if I should take the time to choose one for my entry, because I suck at doing it. :p

I've started on mine. And it's going very well, it even has a "unique" inversion.

I've got the station and lift in place, the drop isn't going so well though...

Is height measured by the track itself or the heartline?

Tom
02-24-2008, 02:12 PM
I started, and now I will probably get rid of half because I don't really like it so far. Does it HAVE to have a lift hill, or can we use some other form of transport?

Nate
02-24-2008, 03:08 PM
Rules say that it must use a lift hill.

Tom

Ok, I must have missed that when I read it.

Does the entire station have to be in the box or just the station track?

Dan
02-24-2008, 04:54 PM
I ran into that problem also...I'd say make the station invisible. The box barely fits the width of it anyway.

Just the station track in the editor. I realize the station doesn't fit, and moving just the track anywhere in the box gives everyone some room to work with.

Here is my entry-Avenged Sevenfold. Each coaster will be one of my favorite bands, why not start with my favorite

I call shenanigans. How does the ride operate 3 trains with no midcourse. I saw a train on one of the last hills and on the weird big hill thing.

EDIT: I fixed a g spot in my ride.

Tom
03-14-2008, 06:00 PM
Its called trim block brakes. Throughout the ride, once it goes past a certain height, next train is cleared to go.

ArrowOwnzU
03-15-2008, 12:32 AM
I saw none. I even checked the block borders. NONE.

Tom
03-15-2008, 03:57 AM
Ok, I will see what the deal is and resubmit. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Akiro
03-15-2008, 03:35 PM
pretty simple, the lift chain is too long, or the lifts deceleration is too low, the trains are slowed down by the lift, but it happens too late, the train is already on the descending part of the lift, and drop down a few mp/h slower..

but your pre-lift brakes have no transport function - the coaster will fail e-stop test
