View Full Version : Roller Coaster Stalls At Six Flags

Largo, MD - Roller coaster riders at Six Flags America were stalled for about two hours when a malfunction led to an automatic safety shutdown.
Park spokeswoman Karin Korpowski says the ride, called Two-Face: The Flip Side, came to a stop about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the top of a ramp. She says when park workers restarted the ride, a hydraulic line leaked, spilling fluid on riders.
Prince George's County fire department spokesman Mark Brady says the ride came to a sudden halt when the cars were brought down from the ramp. He says two people complaining of back and neck injuries were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Korpowski says she could not speculate on what caused the ride to shut down but that the incident will be investigated.
Last month, the same ride also stalled with passengers on board. There were no injuries.
I think the park needs to examine this ride closely as it isn't the first time it's had problems. For some reason I don't believe people actually have the 'back and neck injuries'...that seems to be the main excuse for lawsuits these days.

^ Six Flags America is the “ghetto” of all Six Flags parks. Undoubtedly, nothing will really be done about the problem -- which shouldn’t really come as a surprise considering the state the park is in.

I saw this on CNN, and when a few riders complained of back pain, although they ride did suddenly stop, I knew there would be a lawsuit. Back/neck pain seems like an easy way to get money as it can't be disproved that easily, but I bet the "injured" will make it out to be worse than it really was. It seems like it has been a bad year for parks, but at least this wasn't that serious.
Yeah, this has been a really bad year as far as park injuries go. I agree with Steve, I think they should examine this ride pretty closely, as it'll probably cost more if they loose a bunch of law suits than it will to just do a careful examination of Two Face.

I think Shapiro is going to can this coaster. Two incidents in two months..... they would be better off taking it out and putting a new attraction in.

I have ridden this--Shaipro (as said before) should get rid of this (not only because of the incident, but because the ride not being that great anyway).

It was stuck on the lift hill, so how could there be whiplash(plus in the video, the woman sure is moving her neck a lot), and the media has really made it out to be worse than it was.

It sounds like it was just an error that caused it to E-Stop on the lift. God I hate when the media blows these types of things out of proportion..I believe they said the ride "Was stuck upside down, with riders feet stuck in the air." And towards the end they "Abruptly free fell down", which the ride would of done anyway, if there was no error in the first place. The only 'un-normal' thing that occurred was the bursting of the hydraulic tanks, which I don't believe is too harmful to the human body.

If it were up to me, I wouldd axe the whole park. It sounds like a losing investment in the long run.

It said they were stuck +100ft and they free falled down and came to a stop I imagine there would be some whiplash.....
How could they freefall down? Isn't it a chain lift? I'm a tad confused..

It is like Deja Vu's layout the lift pulls you up and dropped you. I geuss when it got stuck it activated some emergency brakes at the bottom and when it fell ( I have no clue why it fell) it hit the emergency brakes and came to a stop going at high speeds.
That's impossible. The same thing happened to me on Deja Vu and I had no back problems of any kind. I got stuck my the holding brake, than they couldn't release us. Then they dropped us and we ran through the course, no whiplash involved.

That news report was very misleading. Just listen to what they're saying simultaneous to the pictures they're showing. From a viewer's perspective, I'd think that they riders wher inverted for the entire brake-down.

MSNBC first portayed this as it being stuck at the top of the loop "hanging upsidedown"... yeah... They also said that the hydraulic fluid was spraying on the riders and causing sever chemical burns. Yet I read today in the newspaper that only two people decided to be checked out just in case, without injury. I hate the news

However, the spikes are not vertical.
Honestly, the ride isn’t too tall… I couldn’t image that e-stopping would really be that bad.

I also heard on my local news that when one of the ladies that videotaped the incident was walking away from the incident, employees tried to take her camera away.

I saw a brief clip of this on local news where they said "Six Flags America in Largo, TX."
The 'sudden stop' was just the brakes locked in e-stop (don't know if any of you have come into a brakerun on e-stop)...the hydraulic fluid, well that's a problem.
If I were a rider, I would be upset by the brake fluid spilling all over instead of the whiplash (which doesn't sound like was all that bad). I have ridden Invertigo at GA (clone) and I agree with Intaminfan007 about it not being all that great of a ride. They should just pull the plug on it and replace it with something else.

Well said, my friend, well said.;)
Lmao, they will probably ditch the park on someone else, like Jake said sell it. Just so it does'nt make SF look bad. XDDDD

Gotta love the media... If I didn't know better, I'd have thought that the thing got stuck upside-down and then exploded. (In a news report video, they interviewed a person who said they heard a big explosion)

Yes, they are going to sell the entire park because one ride E-Stopped, and had a hydraulic leak..Sounds reasonable.

^ Sounds more like Six Flags to me. Duh, it’s reasonable. ;)

Someone mentioning the 'ghetto' of all Six Flags, i'm sure they want nothing to do with any of that.

In the eyes of Shapiro, all the SF parks were ghetto, it's the conversion to family oriented that matters. With your mentality, he might as well sell all the parks he finds faults in.

I really don't think it makes a big difference.. but i'm sure we all want to be at a park with an excellent enviroment from time to time. ;)
^ And that's why you go to Disneyland or Universal Studios ;).
^ Or any Cedar Fair park. ;)

The news can really suck sometimes. Loads of rides have been stuck before. For a long time also, but when the news gets involved, things just go bad. Ive been stuck on the Nemesis Inferno lift hill for about 30 mins before (yes, not 1 and half hours but still stuck), and I honestely dont see why people can over dramtise this.
Its also silly how the news post general photos of the ride in action while saying it was stuck. Misleads the public quite a bit.

Jake and Alex, you fan boys, lol.
Someone mentioning the 'ghetto' of all Six Flags… That was me and it was an opinion, despite how accurate it may be.
With your mentality [Jeff], he might as well sell all the parks he finds faults in. I have to interject here on Jeff’s defense. His mentality was based on my opinion, not factual information (see above). Pardon him that post please. :)

This coaster was from my home park. It was a good ride, although it had many many breakdowns. Every time I visited the park around 6 pm, the ride would close because of a breakdown. I was even stuck on this when the incident happened. It wasn't even as bad as media explained it. The two people who were transported to the hospital were two ghetto female teenagers who kept stating, "we should sue". In fact, they barely got any hydraulic fluid on them. That's what happens when have media get involved everything. They just want more viewers for they're websites.

I don't think the video would still be there 3 years later.
