View Full Version : Video: Hydraulic Launch Coasters for Noobies
A little experiment I did. I wanted to see if I could combine a bit of education in with some simple editing to make a fun video...also good for people that don't really know much about coasters. If this has any interest I may make more (Invert, LIM, etc.). Here ya go!

Haha. I actually thought it was cool. I have a few suggestions though if you are going to make these in the future.
1. Use a tripod. Just use your camera tripod and a bit of duct tape if you don't want to pay.
2. You probably want to narrate the video; Keep the subtitles though. This is because most of the time I found myself watching the footage rather than reading the subtitles. (if you have an ugly or immature voice {no offense} then just stick with subtitles.)
Other than that it was cool. You'd get more views if you said like "How a hydraulic roller coaster launch works" :p
Keep making these and you'll definitely get some views, and if you advertise your site in the video, it would bring your site more hits aswell.

The video wouldn't really teach noobies much information. It basically says, it goes faster in a shorter amount of time, and then names a quick couple facts about three different rocket coasters... But good none the less..

You make a good point. I guess it's for the real, hardcore noobs, lol. When you first started going on sites like these, you probably didn't know some of those facts, keep that in mind. We all had to learn what TTD, MF, Alpie, and stuff like that stands for.

I have a tripod, but some parks don't allow them, and because I have to film on my regular pleasure visits to parks, it's usually not ideal to have more than a small bag of equipment with me. I have been kicked out of places for having my tripod before (for still photography, though). Also, keep in mind all this footage is from 2006, so my filming skills weren't as good as they are now. (see Medusa Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZOwbdxcvGUI), made without a tripod)

I actually tried that, but balancing my voice, the music, and the sound of the footage proved to be too much...in the future I will continue to work on that, though. Hopefully it'll work out if I decide to throw more of these together.
Thanks for the detailed feedback guys, it helps a lot for future videos.

Although it is said before, "The video wouldn't really teach noobies much information. It basically says, it goes faster in a shorter amount of time, and then names a quick couple facts about three different rocket coasters."
Otherwise, not bad.
That video really shows the difference between Xcelerator and Top Thrill Dragster lol.
What was the song you used in the Stormrunner section. I've been looking for that.

Very cool video! It would've helped me out a ton when I first joined this site, sadly I had to find out all on my own :P.
I'd love to see more of these videos in the future! Keep up the good work.

That and the fact that naming elements like "Flying Snake Dive" means nothing to them.
Very cool video though. Very original.

Nice video but I think you can do without the subtitles, I didn't care to really read them I was more interested in the shots. I think that you should still make these but just make them videos instead of instructional videos.

Excellent video, Dan. Here’s a few suggestions:
As mentioned in another thread, photography with a zoom has become a signature of your work -- revealing the small details we regularly miss. Having that same signature of quality in a series of informational amusement industry videos would bring about a new dimension to videography and reveal the details and attributes that are generally over looked.
For example, when Top Thrill Dragster’s pullys are displayed in the video, they are hard to depict. There are a few circles, a couple cables and some smoke/steam all entangled in a pixilated mess (though YouTube is to blame for video quality). Like in your photography, the small details make all the difference. :)

You get brownie points for using a Daft Punk song.

That's interesting, I've never had that problem. I always figured I don't look too menacing so they don't seem to mind.
I was actually stopped outside SFMM with my still camera lens, they were debating about whether it was too big or not, lol.

Great video, dude! Small question-when did you take that SR footage?
Very original...I also found the subtitles to no avail pour moi. :( 4.5/5 though!
Thanks...I took the footage summer of '06.
I don't get it. Why don't you just make a thread with information about each and every type of hydraulic launch system?
1) Because I like to edit videos
2) Because it's a nicer way to convey simple information
3) Because not only does it have a bit of info, it's also a nice video (if you watch it you'll see)
4) Because the people that are smart enough to find old threads that get buried under new ones know all the information already
5) Because members seem to enjoy watching (see other posts in this thread)
Because this gave him the chance to explain the system, while using some of his video footage at the same time. Also, what purpose would creating a thread that explains the launch system have? There is nearly no opening for discussion in such a topic, making the creation of a thread pointless.
Okay Billy, post your Xcelerator launch compilation video!

Done.
I've seen that video, it's nice, but...what was the point of that, Jeff?

I've taken a look at it, and although a few of the shots were alright, I think the overall quality of the video wasn't that great. It also wasn't very informative. Hydraulic launch systems are complex and I don't think a simple video like this will give people a jist of how the launch functions.

I liked it! But for non-coaster enthusiasts, it may be hard to understand.

Thank you for waking the dead [rolls eyes]
He had a comment about a thread, I don't see why a thread must "die" because it has not been posted in for an extended amount of time. Such a rule would discourage bringing a really great topic back after the discussion has died down for a while.
