View Full Version : Jurassic Park "2" - 6/6/08
So for the past week I've been working on a Jurassic Park type theme park. Basically I've been doing several attractions to test out what works, what doesn't work, etc. In the end I'll probably remove one or two of them and fix up the ones that remain. I'd like some feedback from you guys as to what I should keep, what I should fix, etc. So, let me give you some pictures so you can see what I'm working with.

The entrance, and the Brachiosaur pen.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR243.BMP
The Baronyx and Utahraptor pens, as well as the lift to a new hyper coaster I'm working on.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR245.BMP
I'm trying to not make the rides the focus of the park, more what you are experiencing on the rides. So, for this ride I'm trying to portray a wide open paddock with several different dinosaurs dwelling in it. I'll show a few more hyper pictures and then move on.

Now onto one of the two Jeep Cruiser rides in the park.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR250.BMP
The entrance.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR251.BMP
You first pass by a couple of pens.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR252.BMP
Then you drive through the herbivore enclosure.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR253.BMP
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR254.BMP
Then you drive over a river where you are greeted by a couple of aquatic beasts. Not really dinosaurs.. but prehistoric.. water.. things.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR255.BMP
You then come to the Styracosaurus where a Megalosaurus has escaped from his enclosure during a power outage.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR256.BMP
After narrowly escaping you go around a bend.. only to be met by..
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR257.BMP
The same Megalosaurus is around the bend waiting for you! *Dramatic music plays* Instead of proceeding to the aquatic section of the park you must hurry back to the station in order to escape the.. escaping.. dinosaurs.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR258.BMP
You then drive through this supply area where you find more escaped dinosaurs, this time velociraptors.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR259.BMP
Then through another supply area where building materials are stored, unfortunately, several carnivores have escaped their paddocks and are now stampeding through the buildings.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR260.BMP
InGen has sent a helicopter to take down the escaping dinosaurs, but a large flying reptile is on his way to.. disrupt the flight.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR261.BMP
Then after a quick pass by the river again (and another beast) you have made it back.
Here's one of the boat tours.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR262.BMP
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR263.BMP
Short and sweet. The ongoing "story" of the park is that a Spinosaurus has broken out of his paddock and is breaking in to various attractions around the park. He shows up at least once in most rides.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR264.BMP
Here's a look at the Dive Machine called the "Bird Pen" named because this is where you can find most of the flying "dinosaurs".
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR265.BMP
Another look.
This is the first ride I designed, modeled after the Jurassic Park rides at Universal Studios Hollywood.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR266.BMP
Im not pleased with the building, but there were no roof tiles in the scenery pack I downloaded. I didn't realize this until after I started the park.. So I had to use "harbor walls" basically big cement blocks.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR267.BMP
Another look.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR268.BMP
The splashdown.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR269.BMP
One of the paths.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR241.BMP
One of my less favorable rides, the other Jeep Tour. This attraction features several carnivores. I don't like this ride as much as the others due to it's.. illogical nature? Putting several carnivores in one pen.. probably a bad idea.
http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/SCR242.BMP
One other look at the park.
So, that's about it. Feedback is appreciated. Thanks guys!
eww..get rid of those custom dinosaurs.

^What are you talking about? The dinosaurs add life to the park! What would a Jurassic Park park be without dinosaurs? lol
You have a good start, Jake. The rides seem nice and long. However, the exhibits are a bit...bare. If you had prehistoric dinosaurs, you wouldn't keep them in a flat, barren grassland, would you? Add lots of hills, valleys, trees, rocks, watering holes, everything that seems fit in a jurassic setting. Imagine: What does Jurassic Park look like? That's what you want to create. Not a group of dinosaurs on a flat barren grassy area, but a stampede of raging reptilian giants hurdling over rocks, dodging trees and track, dashing up hills and down gulches. I think doing that would make your park so much better than what it already is. That, and I think you can go overboard sometimes on the in-queue tv's. lol
Alright, thanks, Nick! I'll work on adding some terrain. There weren't much trees in the scenery pack either.. another thing I didn't notice until I started the scenario. But I'll make do with what I have.
I'll post an update of the hyper coaster once I have some more work done on it.

I think The attractions themselves are too spread out and it looks empty. At least add some small hills (imagine a setting like the stampede in the first movie) and more trees as filler.

You have a good start and several nice layouts, but there's no interaction with the terrain, because there is no terrain. If I were you, I'd add lakes, rivers, valleys, etc. But it's a good start.

You got a great little start. The only thing I would say and others have covered most of what I am going to say. You need to really add trees, lakes, rivers, hills, clifs, etc. Other then that its a great start.
I've added a lot of terrain to the park, and I'll be sure to post some pictures soon.
Here are some pictures of the updated terrain and what not.

Many more trees, if I were you I would cover most of the new terrain in forest.
But it is looking better :001_cool:
Forest.. alright.. that wont take forever. ;)
I'll post an update when I have one to post.. profound, I know.

Much better. Now just add some trees, as mentioned, it'll be in pristine shape. However, mix up the trees a bit, have some here, have some there, mix them together, just go for a natural feel. That, and maybe make your waterways a little more...organic. As in, think how lakes and ponds really are. They aren't squared-off blocks and stuff, no, they have curves and meandering bends. I think just maybe add some diversity to your water. And above all, have fun with it. Be creative. You're on the right trail, just a little things that can make your trail more scenic, so to speak. :wink2:
USE THE GAME'S DINOSAURS.
they'd look much better.Maybe not as tall, but surely, better.
Also, work on your coaster's layouts.the hyper was alright until after the first turnaround, and the predrop was a bit long..
And the dive machine, uh..I'd completely start over on that.
And i know JP was mostly about the exhibits, but they had buildings as well...

It looks good but you are spreading all of your work throughout the whole park, focus on one section at a time. The rest you will think of later.
Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention in the scenario editor and I have found I only have two types of "tropical" trees. Hence why the diversity is limited. Also, I'm assuming most of these lakes are manmade, as they were in the book/movie, hence their shape.
As for coaster layouts.. they're not there just to be rides, they're supposed to show off the enclosures, and that's what I was going for. I don't mind saying, I wont take anything you (nin) say to heart, as your post was completely unprofessional. Bold text, poor grammar, and really nothing important to say.
Everyone else, thanks for the help. I'll try to make do with the limited trees i have available. The reason I have plains and the like is because the whole island isn't jungle. In fact, in most of the scenes that involve dinosaurs, especially in any kind of herd they are on a large plain, not a jungle. Just something to keep in mind :).
First off, i do not use the bold text to be more "professional". I simply use to distinguish my posts from others. And my bad for the grammar issue, because simply, I don't care.
Anyways, if you're using the coasters to show off the exhibits, why make them appear unrealistic? It's still possible to make a realistic coaster and to have it show off the exhibit. Case in point, the hyper. Why make a 200ft (or so) hyper that eventually will hit a MCBR about 100ft(?) in the air, only to have the rest of the coaster hug the ground in an unrealistic manner?
Also, try to spruce up some of the enclosures. They're a bit boring atm.

^^ All He said was that your coasters need work, dont take it personal. You asked us to give you feedback and he did.
It's a game, I don't take it personal. All he said was that my coasters sucked, how is that helpful? It's not.
In short, the coasters are staying the same as they are now. I don't see how a coaster that hugs the ground is unrealistic, it has a great rating, it's a crowd pleaser and I have no reason to change it.

I reccomend placing fences in between the track and the dinosaurs (assuming the dinos are meant to be real).

How is the mega coaster unrealistic? What's wrong with a MCBR 100ft in the air (not that you know its actual hight anyway), and how is does it hug the ground "in an unrealistic manner"? It just seems to hug the ground to me, which is pretty cool.
Jake, your second screens are loads better than your first. Just add more trees, plants, terrain, different types of land styles...anything to get rid of a uniform look.
I do not think that my posts are better than anyone else's, it's just my style, and that's all I have to say about that.
And you mustve read my post wrong. I never said the mcbr was unrealistic, i was saying that everything after it is. Also, it is fine to have a coaster hug the ground, but you would never see a coaster hug the ground in that manner.
Im almost tempted to just make my own. Almost.

Why not, just because there aren't any coasters that hug the ground like that in real life...yet?
It may just be me, but I find the bold text distracting and somewhat of a nuisance.
It's only unrealistic because it's never been done before.
I don't see why a ride couldn't work with the terrain in the way that it does. The hill was there, and I went through it. If a freeway can go through a mountain, so can coaster track.

I have to agree with nin, that coaster is very unrealistic, not just after the MCBR, but especially after it. No coaster/park would ever build a ride like that. And yes, higways go through mountains, but they go through a tunnel...not in and out of the top of the mountain...
I also have to admit that the scenery placement, and mass quantities of the same scenery is poorly done. Please realize I say this having tried making a JP park myself and having failed miserably as well...lol. The scenery selection isnt that great for that scenery pack, and I understand that...but you should attempt to space it a bit more and compensate for that.
Also, there is nothing wrong with nin using bold text. He's not saying they're better than others, and it is his perogative to use bold text if he want to. So please drop that discussion. Any issues, PM me. Thanks. :)
As said earlier, I have two types of trees. Hence why I tried to stay away from a forest like atmosphere and focus more on the plains. I'm leaving the coaster the way it is, it works well with what I'm trying to do. Obviously it's my decision in the end, and I've decided to leave it alone. I don't relish demolishing the ride and letting nearly a thousand people flood my paths. ;)
See Steve, nearly a thousand people are ready to ride the mega coaster! It must be realistic, no RCT2 person would board an unrealistic ride.

I'm gonna have to agree with Steve and nin. Logically you wouldnt have a hyper coaster to look at dinosaurs... Especially one that could come in close contact with them and possibly hurt them. I would atleast put up a gate around the ground-hugging track just to keep the dinosaurs from "getting hurt" You wouldnt have to close down the ride to do so either. I believe you said you were going for some sense of realism right? there are gates around rides to keep us out right?
What scenery pack did you use?

^^ BS rct 2 people ride just about any coaster you make doesnt matter if it is realalistic or not realistic, But to stay on topic; tweak the coasters abit and some of the scenery and you are good to go.
OMG! Bold text

OMG! Bold textI was kidding around...
Well, since an argument is in the works, I'll keep this short.
Dan, sorry that bold text is a nuisance to you, but, it's just my style. So people, just ignore it.
Now on to the park : I don't care if you keep the trees, dinosaurs, or any other bit of the custom scenry youre using but just try to blend it in more. Make it seem more natural. All you have right now is a large empty plot of land with a coaster and dinosaurs surrounding it. I can see that your trying to get a JP feel, but that's not what JP was about. A dinosaur park on a tropical island. Yes, a tropical island. it had plains, but those plains (which were not completely flat) were surrounded by a tropical forest. In fact, most of the park was surrounded by forests. And many of the animals were seperated from eachother , apart from the large herds of course.

It does now look a lot better once you added those hills. I do really like the boat ride that is themed after the Universal one. I think the building in it looks great actully. And yes, the hyper is a bit unrealistic and I'm not the biggest fan of the layout, but once you add more scenery to it, it would look great. Keep up the good work....
So I decided to take all the advice I was given, and try again on a much smaller scale. This particular "park" is only 100x100 and derives it's inspiration from the second film in the trilogy. The basic story line is this, you and several others have been chosen to be sent to Isla Sorna (Island in the second and third movie of the series) to research the animals in the wild.
Right now I have four or five species all living in separate parts of the island, and a car ride that takes you past them all. The dinosaurs are meant to be real, and you are meant to be driving on a road (track, whatever) that was left behind when InGen pulled out. I'll be adding more wreckage and ruin as I progress, but this is what I have so far. I'm putting up a download, as I'm short on time now, and will upload screenshots later on.
So, for now, check this out and as always, comment, criticize, praise (hopefully) and all that jazz!

I'll have to download this when I get the chance. It sound really neat  Just wondering, how long is this car ride? lol
I split it into three parts (three stations). But if it was all one piece it would take ten minutes to traverse the course.

That looks a lot better. I love it. Maybe, just maybe, add some paths between the stations, so guests don't get mad. That, and if the ride breaks down, and people are over there, they'll have another way to get out. Just an idea. Idk, it's kinda cool to only have that.
I have mechanics patrolling each station, so that's not really a problem. But I have been thinking about making underground tunnels to get from station to station. I figure that's a way for people to get from station to station and still staying true to the story.
Thanks guys =].

Definetely better. I like the trees better, and the terrain is good. I think it would be cool though, if you built the car ride closer to the ground and did see through track on 8 cars, that would also allow for bridges and things like that. Just an idea.

One thing I like about the park is the fact that the road is in the sky. It's closer to the some dinos' faces and out of reach of the littler ones. I think it's nice - it gives a more monorail feeling. I see what you're saying, but look how the cars on a road on the ground turned out in the first movie. :wink2:
I had a little debate with myself on whether or not having the cars in the air would work, or be realistic. In the end I decided that InGen would want to have the cars higher in the sky at some points to get a better view of the island. And, as Nick said to keep the passengers out of harms way.
I'm also working on building the "ruins" of InGen. Half destroyed buildings, overgrown trees on cars, etc. I'll post some screenshots when I have them.
Thanks guys.
Edit: So I am all done with the park, the download can be found here. (http://www.amusementcast.com/users/jake/images/jurassic_park/Jurassic%20Park%202.SV6) Enjoy!
